Jonathan Harvey

"It is important trying to do something for people with one's music, to give them something ... (that) makes them realise something which they hadn't realised before about the nature of the world."

Jonathan Harvey's electronic and instrumental music is expressive and subtly spiritual. He has composed for orchestra, chorus, opera, chamber ensemble, solo instruments, and electronics, including four major electronic works composed at IRCAM.

His music has been performed by Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Nouvelle Ensemble Moderne of Montreal, Ictus Ensemble of Brussels, and Sinfonia 21. Commissions include the English National Opera, and awards include honorary doctorates from the universities of Southampton and Bristol, Member of Academia Europaea, and Britten Award for composition. He has published two books and his music is represented on 50 CD's, including recordings on Bridge, IRCAM, Qualiton, and Harmonia Mundi.

He currently divides his time between Stanford University, California, and Imperial College, London.
