Stephen Travis Pope

"I intend my music for rituals, or prayer, or meditation, or to animate imaginary spaces, rather than as absolute concert music. Music that is removed from a concrete and relevant social context has no life or spirit. Music is the sound of faith."

Stephen Travis Pope is a composer, researcher, author, software developer, and consultant.

Pope has worked as guest composer at many of the most important computer music studios in the world. He has published widely. He is co-editor of Musical Signal Processing, and his articles have been published in 'The Well-Tempered Object: Musical Applications of Object- Oriented Software Technology' and many other books and journals. Current projects include The Siren Music Tools, The SuperCollider Tutorial, and The CREATE Squeak Smalltalk Page. He was editor-in-chief of Computer Music Journal from 1988 through 1997.

Stephen Travis Pope lives in California. He is on the faculty at the University of California, Santa Barbara, he actively composes and consults, and he pursues his interests in artificial intelligence, human-computer interfaces, and object-oriented software technology.
