![]() David Rothenberg"To know and to feel the meaning of music are two different things. We may not know the reason why the coyote is howling, or have any idea why the brown thrasher sings nearly two thousand songs. With only a little effort, the whole world can be heard as music." David Rothenberg is a clarinetist and writer known for his integration of natural sounds with live improvisation and electronics. Rothenberg has written and edited many books concerning music, improvisation, and ecology, perhaps most notably 'The Book of Music and Nature' (2001), co-edited with Marta Ulvaeus, for which he produced the accompaning compilation CD which contained the music of Pauline Oliveros, Brian Eno, Tuvan throatsingers and Australian butcherbirds. His book 'Sudden Music: Improvisation, Art, Nature', appeared in January, 2002. His most recent book and a companion CD, both titled 'Why Birds Sing,' were released in April 2005. They tell the story of bird song in science, music, and poetry. He has recently performed at the Nyyd Festival in Tallinn, jammed with lyrebirds in the Australian bush, and performed in New Zealand. He lives in New York State and travels widely, preforming and lecturing. |
