SYNC (Garth Paine & Michael Atherton)
Surface Texture Line

Garth Paine (electronics, flute) and Michael Atherton (ancient and contemporary acoustic instruments), a.k.a. Sync, is an Australian duo that experiments with unusual instruments and electronics.

For one thing, they aim to position their experimental sense of sound within a historical lineage. Their idea is to contextualize ancient and modern musical languages within a single form. They do this by using ancient as well as contemporary acoustic instruments — for examples the oud and hurdy-gurdy along with gongs, guitar, percussion, and flute — as the sonic foundation for complex live electronic processes. And their sounds are striking, dramatic, clear, unusual, and often unforgettable.
