![]() Bob L. Sturm"The blending of art and science is one of my guiding artistic principles. I am interested in using the tools I have as a scientist to enhance my artistic motivation and creativity." Bob L. Sturm is a scientist and composer of computer music. More recently, Sturm has explored the sonification of data sets from ocean buoys. During a programming position at the Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, at the University of California, San Diego, Sturm developed methods for listening to the ocean by sonifying the buoy spectral data. In effect this turns the undulations of the ocean surface into the sound itself. Like the particle system sounds, this creates a new way of perceiving and understanding the phenomena, as well as extending the author's interest in composition via sonification. He has presented pieces and papers at several conferences, including the International Computer Music Conference (1999, 2002), and the International Conference on Auditory Display (2000, 2002). He lives and works in Santa Barbara, California. |
