Diane Thome

"The trajectory of my compositional development has been fueled by a commitment to the expressive and evocative potential of sound. I remain fascinated with techniques of spectral composition applied to large-scale form, and with dramatic or narrative musical structures articulated through precisely-sculptured sonic images."

Diane Thome is a composer of solo, chamber, choral, and orchestral works as well as electronic music.

Her music has been presented at the ICMC, National SAI Conference, Siggraph, and Biennale des Arts Electroniques in Europe, China, Australia, Israel, Canada, and the United States. She has been a guest of the Ecole Nationale Claude Debussy, featured on Radio France, and composer-in-residence at the University of Sussex and Bennington Chamber Music Conference. Her music has been commissioned by ICMC 98, Pacific Northwest Chamber Chorus, Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, and Seattle Symphony. Awards include Washington Composer of the Year, and International Computer Music Conference Commission. She was the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in music from Princeton, and the first woman to write computer-synthesized music.

Thome is on the faculty of the School of Music of the University of Washington.
