Jon Appleton is an electronic music pioneer, composer, educator, and author. His compositions span a variety of instruments and media, including orchestra, chamber ensembles, chorus, solo voice, piano, mixed media and electronics and computers. Appleton's music displays a distinctive energy and vitality, as well as an unchanging sense of excitement and urgency.

Jon Appleton has worked at EMS (Stockholm) and GMEB (Bourges, France). He has received a Fulbright Fellowship as well as awards from National Endowment for the Arts, Rockefeller Foundation, Guggenheim Foundation ... He was a co-designer of the Dartmouth Digital Synthesizer and Synclavier. He founded the Bregman Electronic Music Studio at Dartmouth College. Among his writings are Twenty-First Century Musical Instruments: Hardware and Software. He co-edited The Development and Practice of Electronic Music.

Appleton is Arthur R. Virgin Professor of Music and director of the graduate program in electro-acoustic music at Dartmouth College.
