Curtis Bahn

Curtis Bahn

"I consider my performance system to be both musical composition and instrument. It is a work in progress, integrating my backgrounds in electro-acoustic music composition, free improvisation and string bass performance. It incorporates pre-composed materials, interactive compositional algorithms, and real-time digital signal processing in such a way that I can freely intermix these elements in performance."

Curtis Bahn is a string-bass player, live-electronics performer, and pioneer with computer-based interactive systems. His current interests include real-time environments for signal processing and multi-media using Max/MSP utilizing his evolving sensor-based interface for the bass.

Bahn's music has been presented at the ICMC, ISEA, World Acoustic Ecology Conference, Styrian Autumn Festival, Warsaw Autumn Festival, Musik Aktuell, Saalfeldon Jazz Festival, Mobius, Zeitgeist, Engine 27, Tonic, The Kitchen ... He won the Mingus Award in the International Society of Bassists Zimmerman / Mingus competition ... He has performed with Wolfgang Muthspiel, Adam Makovitch, Jim Beard, Marc Johnson, Adam Nussbaum, Rashied Ali, Jed Levi, Tom Hamilton, Eve Beglarian, Satoshi Takeishi, Teresa Marrin Nakra, Warren Burt, Chris Brown ... He plays frequently with Interface, an improvisational live-electronic chamber duo. He has co-developed novel electronic instruments which combine new sensor technologies with multi-directional speaker designs and used them in musical performance and with dancers.

Curtis Bahn teaches in the iEar Program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in Troy, New York, and travels widely as an active performer.
