Thomas Buckner


Known for his improvisations and work in music theater, new music baritone Thomas Buckner has performed some of the most adventurous music of the 20th century. Through his live and recorded work Buckner is consistently innovative in a wide range of musical contexts, mixing genres and breaking barriers in his imaginative endeavors.

Buckner has premiered works by Roscoe Mitchell, Robert Ashley, Morton Subotnik, David Behrman ... performed with Roscoe Mitchell, Leroy Jenkins, Cecil Taylor, Robert Ashley, Joseph Kubera, Aki Takahashi ... and improvised with First Meeting (a trio including Buckner, Roscoe Mitchell, and Borah Bergman). He has appeared at Lincoln Center (New York City), Zyd Netherlands Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, Art Summit (Jakarta, Indonesia), Tampere (Finland) Jazz Happening, Festival of Music of Extended Duration in Prague (Czech Republic), throughout Japan ... He was awarded the American Music Center's Letter of Distinction in recognition of his contributions to the field of contemporary music.

Buckner remans active performing, touring, and developing new repertoire.
