Melody Sumner Carnahan

Melody Sumner Carnahan

"Most of my friends were musicians, composers, and performers. One day I got the idea to have them put the words to music. They did. And in ways I couldn't have imagined."

Author of thirty works of fiction and essays, Melody Sumner Carnahan's cryptic, enigmatic prose lends itself beautifully to interpretation in sound. Ambiguous yet vivid text images arise with the spoken word, allowing music to unfold simultaneously with the narrative structure.

Carnahan's collection of short stories, The Time is Now has been set to music by noted composers, including Robert Ashley, Larry Polansky, Laetitia Sonami ... Carnahan has collaborated also with Yoko Ono, John Cage, Laurie Anderson ... Her work has been published by Burning Books, Clear Light ... and included in San Francisco Chronicle, City Lights Review ... Experimental Intermedia Foundation commissioned a one-hour radio program featuring her collaborative works with composers. Radio programs featuring her writing have been aired by KPFA (Berkeley), WEVL (Memphis), and CFUV (Victoria, BC) ... She has produced and edited books for major publishers and museums, including the Guggenheim Museum (New York), Arts Electronica ...
