Material need not slavishly follow technique's veridical successes--it can include in its own unfolding a critical assessment of its technique. By such an assessment, music sheds its mimetic history and becomes explicitly artificial--reflective of the utter particularity of its thought."
Michael Hamman is both a composer and research scientist. His music includes works for instruments, tape, and computer. His research centers around computational sound synthesis and composition, artificial intelligence and computer interfaces for music composition.
His music has been performed in concerts and festivals throughout Europe, North America, and in Asia.Recordings on Neuma and Capstone labels. Theoretical writings appear in Journal of New Music Research, Interface, Sonus, The Music of Morton Feldman, Otto Laske: Navigating New Musical Horizons, and in numerous other publications and proceedings. Lectures and presentations throughout North America and Europe.
He lives in Urbana, Illinois where he composes and writes. He is Research Scientist at Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
