Otto Joachim

Otto Joachim has composed for small ensemble, orchestra, and solo instruments as well as electronic music. His electronic studio was the first private studio in Canada. He has built an electronic church bell apparatus, electroacoustic violin, and a piano on the principle of a condensor pick-up.

Joachim was first violist in the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, founder of the Montreal String Quartet, and he has conducted the Shanghai Refugee Orchestra, Arts Centre Orchestra Canada ... His music has been performed by the Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony,Toronto Symphony. He was director of the Montreal Consort of Ancient Instruments. His electronic music has been performed at the Canadian Pavilion at Expo 67. His awards and honors include Chevalierde l'Ordre National de Quebec, Prix Calixa-Lavallee de la Societe Saint-Jean-Baptiste (Quebec), and Grand Prix Paul Gilson. A composer's residency and commission for electronic music have been named in his honor at Concordia University.
