Jin Hi Kim

"I aim to fuse old Korean and new Western concepts into a multi-cutural collaboration for my compositions. My compositional concept, Living Tones, is based on Korean traditional music: each tone is alive, embodying its own individual shape, sound, texture, vibrato, glissando, expressive nuances, and dynamics ... The centuries-old Korean court music philosophy and Western science co-exist in Living Tones, reflecting a convergence between eras ..."

Jin Hi Kim has composed extensively for the Korean komungo (a 4th-century fretted board zither) and performed in a variety of contexts linking traditional Korean musical concepts to multi-media interactive performance, and improvisation. She has recently co-developed an electric komungo and is using it to explore technology as a means to transform traditional sound.

She has been commissioned by American Composers Orchestra, National Endowment for the Arts ... She has performed at Darmstadt, Next Wave Festival (New York City), Warsaw Autumn, Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall (New York City), Asian Pacific Festival (New Zealand), and throughout the world ... as soloist, with ensembles such as the Kronos Quartet, Xenakis Ensemble, and the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society, and with leading jazz improvisers such as Derek Bailey, William Parker, James Newton, Oliver Lake, Joelle Leandre, Elliott Sharp ... and she has collaborated with leading performers of Indian sitar, Japanese koto, African drum, and Australian didgeridoo.

Jin Hi Kim actively composes and performs worldwide.
