Joan La Barbara is a well known composer, sound artist, and celebrated new music vocalist. She composes for voice, instruments, electronics, presents workshops on extended vocal techniques, and she is currently composing an opera inspired by the life and work of Virginia Woolf.

She has appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, New York Philharmonic ... premiered works written for her by Robert Ashley, Larry Austin, John Cage, Morton Feldman, Philip Glass ... collaborated with Merce Cunningham, Woody and Steina Vasulka, Kenneth Goldsmith and Bruce Nauman ... received Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, ISCM ... taught at California Institute of the Arts.

La Barbara currently lives in New York City and travels widely, performing and presenting her music.
