Composer of instrumental and electronic music, Salvatore Martirano is best known for the development of the SalMar construction, one of the first interactive electronic instruments.

His orchestral music has been widely performed. He has received commissions from the Koussevitzsky Foundation, Fromm Foundation, Los Angeles Olympic Awards Committee ... His awards include a Fulbright Fellowship, Guggenheim Fellowship, Ford Foundation Grant, American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, and National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. He was artist-in-residence at the American Academy in Rome. He taught at the University of Illinois at Champaign / Urbana.
