![]() Marilyn Nonken "I can't imagine what would drive me to perform, were it not the conviction that I can offer listeners an experience they can't get from anyone else." Marilyn Nonken is a pianist devoted to the 20th- and 21st-century repertoire and the promotion of its composers. Nonken has been presented by Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Merkin Hall, IRCAM, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, Guggenheim Museum, Miller Theatre, the Theâtre Bouffe du Nord, the ABC (Australia), Rockefeller Foundation, Kettle's Yard, Miller Theatre, and Phillips Collection. She appears regularly at new music festivals around the world and has been a guest artist at many universities and conservatories. Composers who have written for her include Milton Babbitt, Mario Davidovsky, Jason Eckardt, Michael Finnissy, and Tristan Murail. She has collaborated with Jonathan Harvey, Alvin Lucier, Salvatore Martirano, and Charles Wuorinen, among others. She is the artistic director and a pianist for Ensemble 21, a contemporary music group based in New York City, which she also co-founded. She regularly performs internationally as a soloist and chamber musician with groups including the Group for Contemporary Music, and Elision (Brisbane). Marilyn Nonkenhas recorded for New World, CRI, Tzadik, Innova, Mode, Lovely Music, Albany, and Metier. Her writings have been widely published, including an issue on performance practice that she guest edited for Contemporary Music Review. She holds degrees from both the Eastman School of Music, where she studied with David Burge, and Columbia University. Currently, Marilyn Nonken lives in New York City as a Steinway Artist and Director of Piano Performance Studies at New York University's Steinhardt School. Available CDs |
