Probably because Jon Appleton is so well known for his work in developing the Synclavier, his other music is less well known. Yet the range of his musical interests and culture, and the many ways in which he has been a pioneer, are also exceptional. Thanks to this CD, which spans many years, we get a glimpse of his other work. His manipulation of sound with analog synthesizers in 'Georganna's Fancy' (1966) and 'Spuyten Devil' (1967), his experiments with tape music in 'Chef d'oeuvre' (1967) and 'Homage to Orpheus' (1969), the humor in 'Newark Airport Rock' (1969) and its update 'San Francisco Airport Rock' (1996), and the narrative quality of 'CCCP (In Memoriam: Anatoly Kuznetsov)' (1969), all indicate a changing, complex, and compelling musical personality.
