    Most people think of Indonesian music as the gamelan, but in fact in Indonesia, there's a large diversity of musical styles and approaches within a large and diverse population. The music on this CD was recorded and annotated by Philip Yampolsky and focuses on music played on a variety of native stringed instruments, sometimes with singing, from the Kalimantan region of the island of Borneo. The CD itself was produced in collaboration with the Indonesian Society for the Performing Arts.

Music of Indonesia 1: Songs Before Dawn

    Gandrung Banyuwangi, music from the Banyuwangi region in eastern Java. A secular genre of songs by young women entertaining male guests, echoing the music of Java's ritual past. Performed by a singer (Basuki) with Gandrung Temu (ensemble) which includes two violins, drums and metal percussion.

Music of Indonesia 2: Indonesian Popular Music

    Kroncong and Dangdut. Dangdut, rooted in music of the urban poor, combines elements of rock with Indian and Middle Eastern popular music favored by Muslim youth since the 1970s. Kroncong started in the 1920s and 1930s, becoming a music popular among the elite.

Music of Indonesia 3: Outskirts of Jakarta

    Gambang Kromong. A style that combines Indonesian, Chinese and sometimes Western instruments. This recording includes rarely heard older works, blending Chinese and Indonesian musical elements, and the most popular modern repertoire which blends gamelan music with jazz of the 1920s and 1930s.

Royal Court Music Of Thailand

    Studio recordings from Bangkok featuring vocal and insrumental ensemble performances of music composed by Thai monarchs in the late 19th and early 20th century. The final work was composed by the daughter of the present king. Compositions include 'Sounds of the Surf Overture (Pleng Homrong Kleun Kratob Fang)', 'The Floating Moon (Pleng Bulan Loy Luen)', 'A Starlit Night (Pleng Ratri Pradab Dao Thao)', and 'Heart of the Sea (Pleng Ok Thalay Thao)'. Performances by Piphat mai khaeng ensemble, Saw sam sai (thre-string fiddle) and Piphat mai truam ensemble, Krueng sai ensemble and Mahori ensemble.

Dream Song And Healing Sounds

    Music by the Temiar people in the rainforests of Malaysia. Includes songs and chants learned from spirit guides in dreams, trances or other conditions when the soul is considered to be 'unbound', unlike their everyday waking life.     Volume 20 in the 'Music From Indonesia' series. Focus of this recording is guitar music from South Sumatra, Lampung and South Sulawesi (local melodies played on western guitar), Sumba and western Timor (home-made instruments resembling guitars playing local melodies), and national popular music which incorporates guitars (from electric guitar to Hawaiian guitar). The guitar came to Indonesia from Portugal in the 16th century.     This CD is a highly diverse selections from Smithsonian Folkways Recordings' 20-CD series documenting the music of Indonesia. The music varies from energetic gamelan and xylophone music to quiet night music for flute, Christian church songs, and dissonant part-singing. The music was recorded in many different locations around Indonesia, between 1990 and 1997.
