Karlheinz Essl performs on a laptop computer that he has transformed into a live electronic musical instrument. The result is exciting and musical. You just won't hear these sounds anywhere else. He performs solo and in duets and trios, responding with sensitivity to fellow musicians, producing fascinating sound transformations, creating spontaneous surprises, and moving quickly from loops to cacophony to tiny clips of vocal sounds to all kinds of textures and ideas. He does all this with his m@ze¦2 (Modular Algorithmic Zound Environment) performance software. His programming skills are impressive and he is also musically talented, all of which makes this CD a pleasure to hear.
The compositions include 'Stille.Macht', 'Unchained', 'Prank', 'Glottis', 'REplay PLAYer', 'At the Edge', and a Quicktime movie of 'Chained'. The performances include Karlheinz Essel (m@ze¦2 performance system and electronics), Bertl Mntter (trombone, voice), Martin Siewert (guitar), Boris Sinclair Hauf (saxophone, electronics), and Margarete Jungen (voice).

A compilation of music composed according to the rules of chaos theory. The composers are Gustav Ciamaga, Heinz-Josef Florian, Ron Fein, Bruno Degazio, Kirk Corey, Karl Mohr, Karlheinz Essl, Gordon Monro, James Harley, Robert Del Buono, and Martin Guertner, and this CD demonstrates that chaos theory does not necessarily produce chaotic music. It's a sobering thought.

Karlheinz Essl: Rudiments

Works by Karlheinz Essl, one of the most interesting computer-music composers in Germany today. The compositions, for acoustic instruments and electronics, mostly composed and performed with the active involvement of computers, include 'Entsagung', for flute, bass clarinet, prepared piano, percussion, and interactive live electronics, and 'Lexicon-Sonate', performed by a computer-controlled Bosendorfer piano. It's a remarkable piece. Liner notes are in German.
