    Jeffrey Krieger in a selection of thorny and contemplative works for solo electronic cello, among them Sarah Hopkins' 'Cello Chi' (1986), Alvin Lucier's 'Indian Summer' (1993), Kaija Saariaho's 'Petals' (1988), N. Sean William's 'Come Window Golds Coming' (1988), and Ronald Halier's 'UITT (Particolare)' (1980). Wired magazine mentioned (rightfully) that Krieger "coaxes a 21st-century voice from the electric-cello's strings."

    Jonathan Harvey's 'Mortuos Plango, Vivos Voco', Kaija Saariaho's 'Jardin Secret I', and Denis Smalley's 'Wind Chimes' are important pieces in the history of computer music. The sounds are gorgeous. And Mesias Maiguashca's mictrotonal 'FMelodies II' for cello, percussion and computer sounds, uses a set of 120 timbres arrayed over a fundamental and its 17th overtone. Also included is Gareth Loy's 'Nekyia'.

    As composer Paul Lansky describes it, "'Notjustmoreidlechatter' is the third in a series of chatter pieces. In all three pieces, thousands of unintelligible synthesized word segments are thrown (with relatively careful aim) into a stew . . ." Also on the CD: Jean-Claude Risset's 'L'Autre Face', Charles Dodge's 'Profile', Richard Boulanger's 'From Temporal Silence', Daniel Warner's 'Delay in Glass', and Kaija Saariaho's 'Petals'.

No image available Spins and Spells: Kaija Saariaho

    Music for solo cello by Kaija Saariaho. Saariaho's style integrates many influences, including the wide range of historic cello literature, in a unique musical style that is at times lyrical and at times dramatic and textural. She uses the timbral range of the cello to great advantage. The compositions include 'Spins and Spells', 'Pres', and 'Petals'. The performances by Anssi Karttunen are breathtaking.

    Petals  =>  PT101  $17.00

No image available Musical Environments: Kaija Saariaho

    Dream-like, imaginative, evocative music by Kaija Saariaho, beautifully performed and realized by Anu Komsi (soprano) and Isabelle Barrière (speaker). The compositions include 'La Dame à la Licorne' and 'Cloud Music'. In 'La Dame ...', Anu Komsi's singing, treated with lengthy reverberation and other processing, creates an ethereal texture in which an evocative spoken text is juxtaposed with the singing. 'Cloud Music' is an electronic composition, a slowly evolving cloud of sound.
