Electronic music by Carl Stone for a dance by choreographer Akira Kasai. Stone describes the work as "a dance about the special kind of life-force that exists in the inorganic matter of the mineral. An example of this life force would be a crystal ... an object that is dead organically can in fact be alive from the viewpoint of 'Exusiai'." The music is a series of organically and slowly evolving sound textures of varying densities. Some are quite complex, and the sounds often have an uncanny beauty. The compositions include 'Solo 1', 'Unconsciousness', 'Violence', 'Meteors', 'Moon Dance', 'Violence', 'Solo', 'Liquid Body', 'Echoing', and 'Bomb'.

No image available Unamuno: David Rothenberg

David Rothenberg, clarinettist, philosopher, student of world music, has dedicated this CD to Spanish existentialist writer Don Miguel de Unamuno, who wrote, "Chance is the inner rythm of the world. Chance is the soul of poetry." And this CD is about chance encounters, with a rainforest bird, for example, or the driving beat of a Moroccan bendir, or the dripping sound of the Antarctic icecap melting, or a danceable groove, or a wash of electronic swells, and Rothenberg's clarinet soars lyrically through and around this audio slide show, searching for some way to save Earth for music, art, civilization. Rothenberg (clarinet, keyboards, overtone flutes) is improvising with soundscapes (rather than chord changes) in a new kind of jazz, and he is joined by Amit Chatterjee (guitar), Brahim Fribgane (frame drum), Abdul X (oud), Steve Scholle (shakuhachi), and soundscapes by Doug Quin and Chris Watson.

Failing Kansas: Mikel Rouse

Mikel Rouse's opera 'Failing Kansas' is based on the story of a multiple murder (told elsewhere by Truman Capote in 'In Cold Blood') that took place in Kansas (USA). Rouse, in fact, based his libretto on transcripts and other materials, some of them by the people directly involved. He also invented a new vocal style, of rhythmic, non-pitched singing that he calls Counterpoetry. The premiere of 'Failing Kansas', at The Kitchen (New York City) in 1995, was a solo performance by Rouse (with films by Cliff Baldwin). And all of the vocal and instrumental performances in this recording are by Rouse himself.

Symphony #5: Glenn Branca

This is the only recording that will ever be released of Glenn Branca's 'Symphony #5', described by guitarist Tim Holmes (who played with the touring version) as "one enormous stringed instrument tuned to the mathematics of the spheres designed to drill a hole into the cosmic ether and weave together in a collective the central nervous systems of any organism in its path." The musicians are Stephan Wischerth (drums), Tim Sommer (bass), Dan Braun (bass), Al Arthur (mallet guitar), Greg Letson (keyboard), Miriam McDonough (keyboard, assistant conductor), Jonathan Beplet (guitar), Hahn Rowe (violin, guitar), Evans Wohlforth (guitar), Matthew Munisteri (guitar), Mark Roule (guitar), and Glann Branca (conductor, harmonics guitar).

No image available Real Time One

Andrea Centazzo (percussion, percussion synthesizer), Alvin Curran (synthesizer, piano, trumpet), and Evan Parker (soprano & tenor saxaphones) improvise. As Centazzo (who also produced the recording) wrote, "Our three languages found a common ground of expression in which the stylistic elements from different musical backgrounds came together and created a unique blend ..." Alvin Curran came from the American avant garde, Evan Parker had left the British jazz world to create a new kind of improvisation, and Andrea Centazzo had improvised solo percussion concerts. The results here are very unusual and fascinating. Note: This CD, with the addition of one new track, is a re-release of the Ictus LP 'real time'. .

No image available Four Organs: Steve Reich

Steve Reich's music from 1970. The compositions are 'Four Organs', with Steve Chambers, Philip Glass, Art Murphy, and Steve Reich playing organs, and Jon Gibson playing maracas; and 'Phase Patterns', with Steve Chambers, Jon Gibson, Art Murphy, and Steve Reich playing organs. Reich was one of the founders of minimalist music and these two compositions from 1970, with their repetitive phrases slipping in and out of sync over long periods of time, were among those early definitive statements.

No image available Soul Menu

Music by Mikel Rouse, for his chamber ensemble, Mikel Rouse Broken Consort. The CD represents 12 years of compositional activity, bridging popular music and minimalist techniques. 'Leading the Machine' (1990) emerged from a percussion work realized on a drum computer. 'Hope Chest' (1991) has an economy of material rooted in the music of Morton Feldman, using pulsing chords and static repetition, superimposed over unexpected instrumentation. 'Ranger' (1987) incorporates an intentionally tongue in cheek jazz rhythmic motif. Similarly, 'Soul Menu' (1992) is based upon a familiar organ riff that is rhythmically permutated. Also included is 'Copperhead' (1992). The performances are by Mikel Rouse (keyboards), Mark Lampariello (electric guitar), Dale Kleps (Ewi Woodwind Synthesizer and woodwinds), james Bergman (bass), and Bill Tesar (drums).

No image available Strumming Music

A live performance by composer and pianist Charlemagne Palestine of his epic 'Strumming Music'. Beginning with a single tone, played as softly as possible and then adding the fifth above, Palestine plays a slow tremolo on the open fifth. He varys the pressure attack on the keys to make some notes stronger and to bring out differences in tone color and timbre. The result is a sound spectrum spread from bright and metallic to soft, rich and round. Since the sustain pedal is constantly depressed, the undampened strings resonate to create complex mixtures of the notes played and their overtones.
