This CD contains the signature works by Julius Eastman in a 3-CD set. Eastman, with his exceptional intelligence, magnificent singing voice, fabulous musical talent, and occasionally outrageous ideas, was a remarkable composer and performer. These CDs are a retrospective, an homage, and a monument to a unique musician. The compositions are: 'Stay On It' (1973), for chamber ensemble; 'If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?' (1977), for chamber ensemble; 'Prelude to the Holy Presence of Joan D'Arc' (1981), for voice; 'The Holy Presence of Joan D'Arc' (1981), for ten cellos; 'Gay Guerrilla' (c. 1980), for four pianos; 'Evil Nigger' (1979), for four pianos; and 'Crazy Nigger' (c.1980), for four pianos. The performers are members of the Creative Associates, with Julius Eastman, conductor, voice, and piano. The package also includes Julius Eastman's spoken introduction to the Northwestern University concert and a fine essay on Eastman's music by Kyle Gann.
