Candombe Beat

Candombe permeates many aspects of Uruguayan music, as in the music on this CD in a somewhat pop vein. Here's La Banda en Fuga, a group of musicians in Montevideo, with Jorge Schellemberg, with instruments and songs. It's not always obvious, but the Candombe is always there.

As Coriun Aharonian writes, "Candombe is an expression linked to the Afro-Uruguayan musical tradition . . . only a few decades ago, and without losing its other meanings, the term Candombe came to define any song that could be rhythmically or metrically compatible with the ultra-rich polyphonic weave of the Afro-Montevidean drums . . . " Mariana Ingold and Osvaldo Fattoruso on this CD project Candombe music with great drive, energy and imagination, in songs and instrumental improvisations.

This collection of Coriún Aharonián's electronic works, composed between 1967 and 1984, is great! Most of the sounds are transformed acoustic sounds, made with instruments and voice and taken from the environment. There are occasionally words used as in radio theater. The compositions are all lively and interesting and what's really amazing is that Aharonian's music has been such a well-kept secret all these years. But it's not just the music, it's also that the spirit behind the music is complex and forceful, as Aharonian hints in the liner notes. He is eloquent, not only as a man of his time but as a man of his place (which is Montevideo, Uruguay). Speaking of the title piece 'Gran Tiempo' (1974, Great Times), he writes: "I think it expresses in a quite precise manner that Latin American idiomatic way between the ironical and the transcendental, between the sad and the very happy, between the pain and the 'no, brother, it's nothing', between the circumstantial doubt and the historical certainty. That Latin American way to define our moment of the seventies . . ." Aharonián has been very active in South American musical life (and non-musical life) during the past many years.

Magma

The selection of Graciela Paraskevaidis' music in this CD contains compositions from different places between Bonn (Germany) and Montevideo (Uruguay) and different times between 1967 and 1993. The range of expression is enormous, from the drama and strength of 'Magma I' (1967), for brass instruments; to the delicacy of 'E desidero solo colori' (1969, And I wish only colors), for chorus of 12 voices; to the experimental sounds in 'Huauqui' (1975), composed with an analog synthesizer; to the dramatic sounds at the extreme ends of the piano keyboard in 'Un lado, otro lado' (1984, One side, other side), for piano; to the Vareseian use of sound and drama in 'Sendas' (1992), for chamber ensemble, and 'Algun sonido de la vida' (1993, A sound out of life), for oboe. Paraskevaidis lives in Montevideo. She writes, "Technique, material, structure, contents, have to do with ideology. They always had. Also in music . . . Being aware of this history . . . can become a way of defending . . . the necessity of a free existence also through the challenge and risk of music creation."

No image available Mutabile

Piano, chamber, and orchestral music by Renée Pietrafesa Bonnet. Pietrafesa's piano music has a beautiful, singing quality, with harmonies that push the edges of tonality. The compositions include 'Translaciones, A mi madre' (1982), 'Pequena mutacion Impro Bruselas' (1974), 'Conciones y danzas para piano' (1995), 'Pieza No. 1 para pinao preparado' (1987), 'Preludio No. 2 para piano preparado' (1976), 'Fantasia para piano preparado y orquesta' (1992), 'Momentos II, pieza para dos flautas y piano' (1995), 'A 4' (1977) for chamber ensemble, 'Fantasia, trio para flauta fagot y piano' (1983), 'Ritual II, de Historias nuevas' (1985), 'Beaute magique' (1989) for soprano, fifteen instrumentalists and magnetic tape, and 'Integracion 8' (1986) for orchestra.
